How to replace a Samsung washing machine drum spider

How to replace a Samsung washing machine drum spider

The crosspiece is a part made of soft metal, with the help of which the washing machine drum is attached to the shaft. It is constantly under load, which over time leads to deformation and breakage of the element. The spare part cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.

Let's figure out how to replace the crosspiece on a Samsung washing machine. We'll tell you how to get to the part and what tools you'll need during the dismantling process.

Dismantling the external elements of the case

To replace the crosspiece of the tank, you will have to completely disassemble the washing machine. First of all, the external elements of the case are dismantled: the top and front panels, the powder receptacle, the "dashboard". During this work, it is enough to have a Phillips and slotted screwdriver at hand.

The work of replacing the crosspiece is quite complicated and labour-intensive. However, if you follow the instructions, you can repair the washing machine yourself. At the first stage, the algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • Unplug the machine,
  • Turn off the tap that supplies water to the washing machine,
  • Disconnect the drain and inlet hoses from the machine,
  • Move the washing machine to the center of the room to make it convenient to work with,
  • Open the hatch door, use a slotted screwdriver to remove the clamp securing the drum cuff,
  • Tuck the sealing rubber inside the drum,
  • Remove the powder container from the machine,
  • Remove the lower false panel of the washing machine, having dealt with the fasteners,
  • Unscrew the waste filter (be careful, water may flow out of the machine when removing the plug),
  • Remove the bolts holding the washing machine housing cover,
  • Remove the top panel,
  • Unscrew the screws located around the perimeter of the control panel,
  • Take a photo of the connection diagram of the instrument cluster contacts to the electronic module,
  • Disconnect the wiring and move the control panel aside,
  • Unscrew the bolts holding the front wall of the washing machine (they are located around the entire perimeter of the panel),
  • Remove the front wall of the housing, having first disconnected the contacts from the hatch locking device,
  • Remove the iron panel from the top of the washing machine (it is located where the dashboard is attached),
  • Unscrew the bolt holding the water level sensor, remove the pressure switch from the washing machine housing,
  • Unscrew the screws securing the inlet valve and remove the plugs from it,
  • Remove the dispenser hopper together with the inlet valve and pipes.

This is the order in which the external elements of the Samsung washing machine case are dismantled. If you are repairing a washing machine for the first time, it is better to study the instructions for the equipment before starting work. This will help you understand the structure of the washing machine and get an idea of where which units are located.

We remove parts that interfere with the removal of the tank and drum

To replace the crosspiece, you need to remove the tank-drum unit from the washing machine. After disassembling the body of the automatic machine, you will see the tank and all the elements connected to it. You need to dismantle the parts that will interfere with the removal of the tank one by one.

The first thing that catches your eye is the upper counterweights. These are concrete blocks that provide stability to the Samsung washing machine. It is necessary to dismantle the weights by unscrewing the bolts that secure them.

There is another counterweight located below. It also needs to be removed. The bolts fixing the block are removed with a handle, onto which a socket head of the required size is put on. Next, it is necessary to dismantle the remaining internal parts that interfere with the removal of the tank.

The further algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • Disconnect the heating element contacts from the tank (red and blue power wires, grounding and temperature sensor connector),
  • Unhook all the wire twists connected to the tank,
  • Detach the pressure switch hose,
  • Disconnect the electric motor connector and the block itself that goes to the motor,
  • Unhook the drainpipe from the tank,
  • Remove the bolts securing the lower shock absorbers.

To work with the lower shock absorbers, you will need a 13 mm head. Unscrew the fixing bolts on each side. The container is held on top by four springs, which will also have to be unhooked. After this, you can begin to remove the tank-drum assembly.

After removing the tank, place it on a hard, level surface, with the pulley facing up. Next, remove the drive belt and disconnect the engine. Then, detach the shock absorbers from the tank.

The pulley does not need to be removed at this stage. The tanks of Samsung washing machines are detachable. This greatly simplifies the work - to split the plastic container in half, it is enough to cope with several brackets.

We disassemble the tank and get to the crosspiece

The next step is disassembling the unit. It is very easy to split the tanks of Samsung washing machines in half. The tank is not one-piece, as in some models of other brands. The parts of the tank are separate and connected with special fasteners.

Place the tank-drum unit vertically and remove the clamps one by one with a screwdriver. Usually there are 5-7 fasteners. After dismantling the clamps, you can split the tank in half.

The upper part of the tank can be removed immediately. Further work is carried out with the lower half. It will be necessary to pull out the drum from it, behind which is located the crosspiece.

Sometimes the crosspiece is so badly damaged that the drum can be easily pulled out of the tank, and the shaft itself remains in the plastic container. In any case, you will have to disassemble the entire structure. The algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • Unscrew the nut securing the drum pulley,
  • Remove the drum "wheel",
  • Push the bolt inward.

After this, you will be able to dismantle the damaged crosspiece. To do this, unscrew the three bolts holding it. If there is wear, pre-treat the fasteners with WD-40. A new replacement part is selected for a specific model of the Samsung washing machine. Before installing the whole spare part, be sure to clean the inside of the tank and the back surface of the drum from plaque, dust and dirt.

It is also advisable to immediately check the condition of the bearing unit. If the metal rings and seal are worn out, it is recommended to replace them simultaneously with the crosspiece.

The new part is also fixed in place with three bolts. Then the drum with the crosspiece is placed back into the tank. The pulley is fixed on the shaft.

The next stage is assembling the plastic container. The upper half of the tank is placed on the lower half and the parts are pulled together with staples. First, the lower staple is installed, then the upper one, then all the others. After that, the shock absorbers are “sat” in place and secured with bushings.

Next, the machine is assembled in the reverse order. The engine is attached to the tank, then the unit is placed in the housing, and the reservoir is suspended on springs from above. The lower shock absorbers are fixed with bolts. Then all previously removed wires, pipes, and parts are connected to the tank.

Next, assemble the body of the washing machine. First, fix the front wall in place, then the control panel, and finally the top cover. Once you have finished the work, connect the machine to the utilities and run a test cycle. Make sure that the drum rotates without any extraneous sounds. Also make sure that the machine does not leak. If everything is in order, the repair can be considered complete.

The breakage of the crosspiece does not happen suddenly. Before that, users hear a hum and extraneous noise during the operation of the machine. The destruction of the part can occur due to:

  • Too hard tap water, which causes scale formation
  • Low-quality detergents used for washing,
  • Worn bearings (when the rings wear out, the crosspiece begins to deform).

Therefore, it is important to monitor the hardness of tap water and, if necessary, use softeners. You should also buy only high-quality household chemicals for the washing machine and not overload the machine. Then such labour-intensive repairs can be avoided.
