How to disassemble a washing machine door

How to disassemble a washing machine door

Many washing machines have a weak point in the handle, it can stop working at the most inopportune moment. To replace the faulty part, you will have to disassemble the door of the washing machine. Let's figure out how to do it correctly.

What to do if the lock is locked?

An extremely unpleasant situation, most often it occurs when the owner tries to open the washing machine to get the laundry out of the drum. At this moment the handle loudly "clicks" and breaks off, as a result of which it is not possible to open the hatch. What to do in this case?

In fact, everything is not as sad as it may seem, you can open the drum of the washing machine with an ordinary spoon, the order of actions:

  • Select the appropriate cutlery, on each machine the locking element may be located at a different distance,
  • Determine the center of the hatch,
  • Insert the handle of a spoon into the gap between the door and the body of the washing machine,
  • Feel the required part and press on the spoon.

The locking mechanism will work, and the door will open. If you don't succeed the first time, repeat the procedure a few more times, changing the vertical position, i.e. try to feel the element a little lower or higher.

Some washing machines are more advanced in this aspect, the designers have provided an emergency opening lever, it is located at the bottom of the body, near the drain filter.

Disassembly instructions

After you have managed to open the door, you need to start the disassembly procedure. The old handle will be thrown away, it cannot be repaired, you need to buy a new one. In order not to make a mistake with the choice, you should write down the serial number of the washing machine, as well as its model. What should you do?

  • Disconnect the machine from the power supply.
  • Turn off the water supply valves.
  • Remove the door from the special hinge; to do this, you need to unscrew the two mounting bolts.
  • Place the door on a horizontal surface and begin disassembling the hatch.
  • Unscrew the screws located around the entire inner perimeter of the sash, do not lose them.
  • Remove the top of the hatch and the glass (be careful with the latches).
  • On the inside there is a metal rod, it needs to be removed, and the rest of the lock elements can be taken out: the spring, the plastic part, the latch, the pin connecting the mechanism.

After complete disassembly, all that remains is to install a new handle in the reverse order. Even if only one element is broken, each one must be replaced. Otherwise, there is a risk that one of the parts will not fit the new handle, which will lead to another malfunction. To install a new handle, do the following:

  • Install a new spring,
  • Place the new retainer on the side of the spring, holding it with a screwdriver, you need to install the retaining pin, but not all the way,
  • Place the plastic handle on the retainer and push the pin until it stops.

That's all, all that's left is to assemble the door in the reverse order and the repair is complete. Anyone who reads this article can handle it. In the future, you should refrain from abruptly opening the handle of the washing machine. If you are not sure that you can handle the repair, contact the service center or call a technician to your home.
